Welcome to Wiser. I’m Rob.

Thanks for dropping by. There’s a lot of stuff out there, so if this resonates with you, I’m stoked.

What’s Wiser?

An online place where I share what I’ve observed, learned, curated and think is worthwhile so you can have stories, insights, and ideas that inspire you in your endeavours, whatever they may be.

Go you.

The difference here is we talk openly and honestly about what’s real (including mistakes), we use everyday language, and we go deeper when needed using study, research and books (lots of books!). And we do it with clarity, simplicity and a bit of a poke at ourselves.

You’ll probably feel right at home if:

  • You’re curious about life, this world, humanity, and yourself.

  • You’ve been around on the pale blue dot for a while and don’t want to waste your time on nonsense, woo-woo, or things that just don’t matter in the end.

  • You want to live a life that truly matters to you, to others, and to the world in which we all live, and not just go along with the flow.

  • You don’t buy into the modern script with all its noise, distractions, and many worthless pursuits. You know there’s much more than that to life.

  • You believe that while we’re not necessarily broken, a growth mindset is a good idea and can help us be fully alive and as effective as possible.

  • You’re into kindness, caring, creativity, fun, learning, and practical wisdom.

  • You enjoy nature, friends and family, travel, books, art/music and concerts, pondering how things are and why, stretching yourself, and sometimes doing very little with a nice brew and an excellent book or three.

Yours truly with pooches and family

In a nutshell

  • Professional radio announcer and sound producer for over 10 years.

  • Twenty-five years in the corporate world in learning and development/coaching/speaking in the areas of communication skills, influencing clients, and leadership.

  • Just completed a Graduate Diploma in Psychology (at the age of 63) to add to my science degree and teaching diploma from years back.

  • Spoken to over 50,000 people in audiences of various sizes and types since 1980.

  • Creator of online video-based courses in communication skills, relationship building skills, and influence.

  • Currently, working 3 days a week as Handyman Rob to keep in touch with actual people and use my power tools. :)

The real track record

  • Intimately familiar with both dreams and failures in career, relationships and finances mainly, and have accepted them as part of being human.

  • Divorced after 29 years of marriage, eventually met someone else and almost immediately faced massive challenges with cancer (her, not me). This was at a time when I experienced empty nest syndrome, which I found very hard.

  • Left religion after 35 very dedicated years. In 2012 I decided to go public with a declaration that it was over. That caused no end of challenges for me, my family, some friends and acquaintances many of whom I haven’t seen since then. But I now feel freer, more accepting, and happier.

  • Experienced some significant mental health challenges and survived by learning Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, a process that makes sense and works for me.

I’m married to my best friend. I’m in good health (apart from the odd aching joint!). I’m mortgage-free. I have a cool granddaughter. I’ve traveled solo around the world for 10 weeks in 2016. My dogs love me (actually, they’d probably love anyone). I have wider family whom I love. I’m truly a wealthy man.

This is the real stuff from which I’ve experienced, learned, gained insights and found practical wisdom that I would like to share with you.

And hear yours, of course.
